SYRACUSE – Jerry E. Anderson, 80, Leesburg, passed away Dec. 20, 2011, from the effects of prostate cancer.
He was born April 18, 1931, in Kokomo, to Frances and Ed Anderson. In 1953, he married Nancy Hill, who preceded him in death. They celebrated 44 happy years together. In 2010, he and his grade-school girlfriend Jerry Hardy were married in Estero, Fla. They had several happy years together. She survives.
He spent most of his life in Kokomo where he attended Palmer Grade School, where he was stage manager of the dramatic club, president of the junior class, director of the 1949 Hullaballoo and member of the National Honor Society. He attended and graduated from Culver Summer Naval School during his high school years. While there, he earned the bronze, silver and gold Tuxus medals. He earned the highest award for shooting, by the NRA-Distinguished Rifleman. He was an excellent competition swimmer and diver and won numerous events in those sports over the years.
He was president of his class at Culver and had to turn down an automatic appointment to Annapolis so that he could attend General Motors Institute. He graduated with a bachelor’s of science degree in mechanical engineering. He spent his entire working life at Delco Electronics in Kokomo.
During the Korean War, he spent two years in the U.S. Army. He was active in civic affairs. During his lifetime, he coached church league basketball and flag football. He was a baseball umpire for 30 years, a director of the Kokomo Humane Society and Exalted Ruler of the Kokomo BPO Elks in 1965.
Surviving him are his brother, Charles Thomas; his daughter, Kathy (and spouse Mark) Clary; two sons Jim (and spouse Mary) Anderson and Tom (and spouse Joan) Anderson; five grandchildren, Jonathan, Melissa, Courtney (and spouse Kile) Brown, Stephanie and Joe.
Services will be Tuesday at 3 p.m. at Eastlund Funeral Home with Pastor Denny Wilson of the Warsaw Community Church officiating.
Calling is from 1 to 3 p.m. Tuesday prior to the service.
