SYRACUSE – Jeanne Elizabeth Sutton Jones, 90, died on Jan. 20, 2015, at Miller’s Merry Manor in Syracuse. She was born Dec. 1, 1924, in Terre Haute to Aubert Waldo and Madge Garten Sutton. On Nov. 4, 1945, she married William T. Jones Jr, who preceded her in death on Feb. 13, 1987. She was a graduate of Shortridge High School, Indianapolis, where she was on the staff of the Shortridge Daily Echo, the first daily high school newspaper in the nation. She attended Butler University, College of Education, where she was a member of Kappa Alpha Theta Fraternity. She and her husband were co-owners of the Jones and Hurt Mortuary, Indianapolis, before moving to Lake Wawasee in 1953, later opening the William T. Jones Real Estate and Insurance Agency in Syracuse. She followed her lifelong love of journalism as a feature writer for the Syracuse Wawasee Journal. She was also the author of “Historical Sketch of St Andrew’s United Methodist Church.” She was a volunteer at Goshen General Hospital, later working there as the unit secretary coordinator. She was later employed in the business administration department of Bowen Center, Warsaw and Oaklawn Psychiatric Center. She joined Family Counseling Service, Elkhart, to become the first manager of Consumer Credit Counseling Service in Elkhart County. In 1995, after a short retirement, she became the director of the Old Jail Museum, Warsaw, retiring again in 2005. An ardent antifeminist, she believed strongly in the traditional values and the sanctity of marriage, family and home. She was the first president of the Bashor Home Auxiliary, served as president of the Lakeland Community Drug Education Committee, and was on the board of the Kosciusko County Juvenile Justice Task Force. A longtime member of St Andrew’s United Methodist Church, Syracuse, she was also chairman of the Methodist Thrift Shop Committee for a number of years. She also served as church historian. She was a life member of The Bashor Home Auxiliary and The Kosciusko County Historical Society, a member of the Agnes Pruyn Chapman Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution and the late Wednesday Afternoon Club of Syracuse. Surviving are a daughter, Mrs. David (Kathleen) Jones, Syracuse; two sons, Lawrence E. (Valerie) Jones, Dublin, Ohio, and W. Scott Jones, Orlando, Fla.; one granddaughter, Mrs. Howard (Emily) Hale; two great-grandsons, Gabriel and Nolan Hale, all of West Alexandria, Ohio; and extended family Mr. and Mrs. Richard (Linda) Mayberry, Goshen. She was preceded in death by her parents and one brother, James W. Sutton. Visitation will be Friday from 2 to 4:30 p.m. and 6 to 8 p.m. at St. Andrew’s United Methodist Church, Syracuse. The funeral will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday at St. Andrew’s with a graveside service to follow at Crown Hill Cemetery in Indianapolis. ***** Memorials may be made to Bashor Children’s Home, P.O.
