SYRACUSE - James J. Hughes, 89, of Goshen, passed away at 6:35 a.m. Oct. 23, 2010, at the Center for Hospice, Elkhart.
He was born Jan. 20, 1921, in Huntington, to James and Loda Johnson Hughes. In 1947, in Hartford City, he married Juanita "Jay" Glancy Hughes, who survives.
He graduated from Roanoke High School and Ball State University, where he obtained a master's degree. He taught and coached at Andrews, from 1946-52; Syracuse from 1952-56; and in the Goshen School system for 28 years, where he started the building trades program. He was an honorary referee for the Goshen Relays and an announcer for Goshen home football games for 25 years. He was a U.S. Navy veteran and served as a Lt, jg, in the Pacific Theater during World War II. He was a member of St. Andrew's United Methodist Church, and an associate member of First United Methodist Church of Goshen and Christ United Methodist Church, Venice, Fla., where he sang in the choirs from 1953 to 2004. He was a member of the Lions Club and the Indiana Retired Teachers Association. He served as president of the Syracuse Town Board for eight years and co-chairman of the World War II USS Salute Ship's Reunion from 1986-2002. He and his wife wintered in Venice for 17 years.
Also surviving are a daughter, Julie Wozniak, Pierceton; a son, Jeff (and spouse Gretchen) Hughes, Huntington; a daughter, Jenny (and spouse Gary) Lewis, Crawfordsville; a grandson, Mason (and spouse Jenni) Hughes; and granddaughters, Morgan (and spouse Chris) Howard, Sarah Lewis and Emily Hughes. He was preceded in death by his parents; a sister, Vivian Patten; and a grandson, Zach Gann.
Services will be at 11 a.m. Saturday at St. Andrew's United Methodist Church, Syracuse, with the Revs. Mark Eastway and Ed Fritz officiating.
Calling is from 4 to 8 p.m. Friday at the church.
