Jail Needs Psychologist

Have you ever thought about who is in jail?

Before I was in jail, I thought I knew: drug dealers, drug users, alcoholics, drunk drivers, thieves and so on. Ya, they're all here, but if you look a little closer you will see much more. You will see brothers and sisters in pain.

In my four months in jail, I have seen dozens of young men desperate for help. Young men just waiting for someone to help them. Some say, "just take control of your life and help yourself." Well that sounds good, but if there is someone out there who can do that, then please tell the rest of the world how.

I have seen people that want help and people that don't want help. I've seen people come here for two days and find God, and people come here for months just to come back a week later.

All of us need Christ in our lives, in jail or out of jail. Thankfully we have John Boren and all the wonderful people that help make up Kosciusko County Jail Ministry. Without them, I probably would not be alive today. Thank you.

But did you know, currently the jail has no psychologist. That's right, no one. How can that be?

On Tuesday the 18th, I met with the doctor, which only comes in once a week. I saw the doctor because it turns out I have bipolar disorder. Or should I say, I'm blessed with bipolar. Well, from what I have read about bipolar, the best treatment is medication and a psychologist. Of course, the jail will give you needs. But when I said I want to talk to a psychologist, someone who can properly help and explain about bipolar, the nurse said we don't have anyone. What? How can that be? How can a jail with all kinds of people, all needing some kind of help, not have a psychologist?

So for me, I've come to the conclusion there isn't much rehabilitation, just imprisonment. So as you read the paper and see the same person over and over getting arrested, just remember he may not be a bad person. Maybe he is sick. Unfortunately, he may never find out.
