SYRACUSE - Jacob E. Kern III, 67, of Syracuse, died at 3 a.m. April 10, 2007, in his residence.

He was born Dec. 27, 1939, in Milford Junction, to Jacob Jr. and Magdelene Harter Kern. On May 6, 1961, he married Susan Morganthaler, who survives.

A lifetime area resident, he was former owner of Wawasee Bowl Bowling Alley; a Ford mechanic; and a heavy equipment operator with Carl Freel, owner of Firestone Construction. He attended Grace Lutheran Church, Syracuse; was a previous member of several bowling leagues; a member of Eagles Lodge, Syracuse; and was formerly active in farming. He loved John Deere tractors.

Also surviving are two sons, David E. (and wife Mary) Kern, Syracuse, and Daniel J. Kern, Columbia City; a daughter, Deborah A. Kern, Syracuse; seven grandsons; a granddaughter; a sister, Mrs. Charles (Judy K.) Jones, Anderson; and a brother, Jeffrey M. (and wife Brenda) Kern, Syracuse. He was preceded in death by his parents.

Services will be at 1:30 p.m. Thursday at Mishler-Eastlund Funeral Home, Harris Chapel, Syracuse, with Pastor Richard Dunning officiating. Burial will be in Syracuse Cemetery.

Calling is from 5 to 8 p.m. Wednesday at the funeral home.
