FORT WAYNE - The Indiana Republican Party chose Max Engling as its nominee for secretary of state during its state convention over the weekend.
They also chose incumbent Daniel Elliott as state treasurer and incumbent Elise Nieshalla as state comptroller.
Engling won the nomination on the second ballot, coming out ahead with 867 votes of Knox County Clerk David Shelton, 627 votes, and incumbent Secretary of State Diego Morales, 134 votes. Jamie Reitenour, a conservative activist, was eliminated in the first round of voting.
Engling now faces Democrat Beau Bayh, Libertarian Lauri Shillings and former Republican Indianapolis Mayor Greg Ballard in the November election.
Elliott and Nieshalla were unopposed at the GOP convention. They face Democrats Coumba Kebe and Jessica Bailey, respectively, in the general election.
In a news release from the Indiana Republican Party, Engling stated, “I would like to thank my fellow Republican delegates for their support and for nominating me to be our candidate for secretary of state. Moreover, thank you to my fellow candidates and their supporters for their time, energy and dedication to the GOP. I look forward to running this race ahead together as one Republican party, dedicated to our shared conservative values and fighting to continue the strength we've built in our great state."
Following his nomination, Elliott thanked delegates for their support and reaffirmed his commitment to serving Hoosiers.
"I'm grateful for the delegates' confidence in my nomination. That trust means everything, and I don't take it lightly," Elliott said. "Over the past two years, our office has generated $1.24 billion in investment revenue, double the previous decade without raising taxes.
"As we head into November, our message is simple: Results count. Hard work counts. Hoosier values count. Let's show this country what conservative leadership looks like."
"Thank you, delegates, for placing your full faith in me to represent our Republican Party for state comptroller," Nieshalla said. "It’s been my honor in this office to bring the bright light of transparency to the billions of federal dollars coming to the state of Indiana, re-establish the top priority of fiduciary duty over politicized investing, and leverage new sophisticated technologies to protect taxpayer dollars — and we’re only getting started!"
