INDIANAPOLIS – The Indiana Alcohol and Tobacco Commission denied two liquor applications for The Pug Pub, Mentone, on Wednesday.
The Kosciusko County Alcohol Tobacco Commission made the recommendation that the state deny the request. The county ATC denied the request 3-0 for the liquor licenses for The Pug Pub during a meeting Jan. 8 due to it being within 200 feet of a church and not having a letter of acceptance from the church.
The state ATC stated The Pug Pub did not meet the statutory requirements for the liquor license due to The Pug Pub’s proximity to the church and not having the letter of acceptance.
In December, Mentone town attorney Austin Rovenstine said he put together an enabling ordinance after he was told a business was inquiring about a liquor license. He looked through Mentone’s ordinance book and couldn’t find an enabling ordinance, so he put one together.
During Jan. 8’s Kosciusko County ATC meeting, Tim Carter, owner of The Bulldog, and Elizabeth Thompson, owner of BBQ on Broadway, spoke against the request for the liquor licenses. A letter from Tim Croy, vice president of the Mentone Town Council and Mentone Chamber of Commerce, was also presented to the county board, who was told a copy was also sent to the state. Croy’s letter also spoke against the request for the liquor licenses.
