Hueber, Seiss On Opposite Sides This Time

Hueber, Seiss On Opposite Sides This TimeIn the fall of 2000, Kris Hueber and Brad Seiss were standouts on a Warsaw Community High School football team that dominated opponent after opponent en route to a 9-2 record.

Hueber, a senior, was the man in the middle, wreaking havoc on opposing offenses as he made a school-record 141 tackles in his senior season at inside linebacker.

Seiss, a junior that year, was Warsaw’s speedy, powerful runningback that still holds a school record with five touchdowns in a game, something he did twice in his prep career.

Hueber finished his high school days with 240 tackles, still the highwater mark for the Tigers, and went on to a prolific career with the Manchester University Spartans.

Seiss, who rushed for 1,612 yards as Warsaw went 10-1 the following year, finished his prep career with 3,652 rushing yards before playing at the NCAA Division I level for the Ball State Cardinals.

Both left their mark on the Warsaw program, and for the first time since the Tigers fell 10-7 in a heartbreaking sectional semifinal loss to the eventual state champion Penn Kingsmen, Hueber and Seiss will be on the same field Friday night.

Only this time it will be on opposite sidelines.

Hueber is Warsaw’s defensive coordinator and is tasked with the feat of slowing the Merrillville Pirates, who are coached by Seiss.

The Tigers, 9-2 in hall of fame head coach Bart Curtis’ second season in Warsaw, beat Penn 35-18 last week to capture the program’s first sectional title.

Seiss is in his fifth season as head coach of the Pirates, who are 10-1 after beating Crown Point 10-9 in the sectional final, and is in his eighth season overall as a head coach.

Seiss has two sectional titles on his coaching resume, the other coming with Merrillville in 2015.

The Tigers and Pirates will square off Friday at 7:30 p.m. EST, with the winner playing either Homestead or Carmel in next week’s Class 6A northern semistate.

Regardless of who wins, the Tigers or Pirates, the Warsaw Community will have a rooting interest next week.
