Howard Allen Swinehart, 86, of Victoria, Texas, died Aug. 4, 2010, in his residence.
He was born Aug. 12, 1923, in Warsaw, to Herman Ray and Matilda Rebecca Shilling Swinehart. On Nov. 28, 1978, in Houston, Texas, he married Nancy R. Miller, who survives.
Living most of his life in the Warsaw area, he moved to Victoria, Texas, in 1989. He was a city mail carrier for the U.S. Postal Service, Warsaw, for 31 years, retiring in 1983. He was a member of American Legion Posts 49 and 166, and Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 1126. He enjoyed bowling, auto racing and traveling. He was a 1941 graduate of Warsaw High School. A veteran of the U.S. Army during World War II, he was corporal with the 379th Anti Aircraft Artillery Battalion, serving in Rhineland Central Europe. He entered Feb. 17, 1943, in Toledo, Ohio, and was honorably discharged April 13, 1946, at Camp Atterbury.
Also surviving are a son, William Swinehart Hampton, Ga.; two stepsons, Stephen Smith, Sandwich, Ill., and Bruce Smith, Warsaw; two daughters, Amber (and spouse Allan) McKrill, Warsaw, and Kimberly (and spouse Philip) Senff, Scottsdale, Ariz.; a stepdaughter, Melissa (and spouse Tom) Sorg, Saline, Mich.; 16 grandchildren; 29 great-grandchildren; two great-great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his oldest son, Steven Swinehart, who died Aug. 9, 1979; a grandson, Daniel A. Swinehart, who died April 2, 1996; a brother, Homer E. Swinehart, who died April 11, 2002; and an uncle, Albert Shilling, who died March 30, 1995.
Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Friday at Titus Funeral Home, Warsaw. Burial will be in Oakwood Cemetery, Warsaw.
Calling is from 2 to 4 p.m. and 6 to 8 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home.
