Hot-Handed Lancers Rout Silver LakeWINONA LAKE – Grace College started hot and finished strong for a home win Friday.
The Lancers men’s basketball team hit six of its first seven three-point attempts in a 107-61 rout of Silver Lake College in the Terry Polston Hoops For Hope Classic.
“Well when the shots are going in, you look really good, don’t you?” said Grace coach Jim Kessler. “We were rocking.”
Eighteen of Grace’s first 19 points came from the arc.
Charlie Warner nailed a trey to start the game, which was followed by three-pointers from Haden Deaton and Jaret Sons.
After Logan Godfrey’s free throw, Warner, Sons and Deaton again hit trifectas.
Four minutes into the game, the Lancers (7-0) held a 19-5 lead.
Silver Lake (1-7) would not get closer than 12 points after that, and Grace had the game safely put away by halftime.
“Our guys played hard, but it is a little disheartening when they make that many shots,” said Silver Lake coach Brandt Danals.
The Lancers hit 56 percent of their shots overall and 61 percent of their three-point attempts.
Meanwhile, Silver Lake hit just 32 percent of its shots, including 33 percent of its three-point attempts.
While Kessler commended the Lancers’ offensive effort, he was equally impressed with his player’s defense.
“We really established defensively how we were gonna play,” he said.
Sons was 6 of 7 from the floor, hitting 4 of 5 attempts from the arc, for a team-high 18 points.
Deaton scored 16 points, while Warner added 12, Tim Swanson scored 11 and Noel Mpie registered 10.
Silver Lake’s Michael Cantre led all scorers with 19 points, while Jabriel Burnette had 12 points and Patrick Walls added 11.
The Terry Polston Hoops For Hope Classic is held each year at Grace to raise money for the Kosciusko County Cancer Care Fund.
Kessler praised KCCCF’s efforts in the community to pay for the expenses those battling cancer.
“It’s really encouraging to someone, when the power is turned off and they pay those (bills) for you,” Kessler said.
Grace will play its second and final game of the classic today at 4 p.m. against Emmaus Bible College (Iowa).
