NORTH MANCHESTER – Helen S. Martin, 95, of Peabody Retirement Community, North Manchester, went home to be with Jesus at 10:38 p.m. May 21, 2014, in Kosciusko Community Hospital, Warsaw. She was born Oct. 23, 1918, in Moore, Okla., to Henry and Louise Schwartz Kehr, who preceded her in death. She was married Dec. 24, 1941, to Edward “Pepper” Martin, who died Oct. 23, 1995. She was employed with Oppenheims Department Store for 20 years where she worked as a clerk and buyer in the lingerie department. She attended Ossian High School. She was a woman of great faith and was a 50-year member of North Manchester United Methodist Church. She was also a member of North Manchester Garden Club, Fellowship Class of United Methodist Church, Saints Alive Choir, Kenapochamocha Club, United Methodist Women Club and Rebeka Circle at United Methodist Church. She also spent time volunteering at Peabody Retirement Community. Her children and grandchildren were her greatest joy and she cherished every moment she was able to spend with them. She will be greatly missed by two sons, Jerry (and spouse Vicki) Martin, Leesburg, and Scott (and spouse Stephanie) Martin, South Bend; a daughter, Peggy (and spouse Douglas) Sawyer, Winona Lake; a sister-in-law, Dorothy Kehr, Fort Wayne; six grandchildren: Lori (and spouse Keith) Everest, and Mandy (and spouse Dave) Bailey, all of Warsaw; Aaron Sawyer, Washington, D.C.; Andrew Sawyer, Chicago, Ill.; and Kelci and Derek Martin, both of South Bend; and three great-grandchildren: Keller and Finn Bailey and Eva Everest, all of Warsaw. She was also preceded in death by two brothers and two sisters. A memorial service will be 2 p.m. Friday at Peabody Chapel, 400 W. Seventh St., North Manchester, with Pastor Larry Ray officiating.
