NAPPANEE - Helen H. Hoffer, 89, of Miller's Merry Manor, Wakarusa, and formerly of Nappanee, died at 5;53 p.m. May 15, 2010, in Elkhart Hospice House, after a brief illness.

She was born March 6, 1921, south of Nappanee, to Grover and May Keeley Hamman. On April 30, 1942, in Nappanee, she married Gerald L. Hoffer, who died March 13, 2002.

Living most of her adult life in Nappanee, she graduated from Nappanee High School in 1939, where she was salutatorian and vice president of her class. She retired from the former Coppes Kitchens, Nappanee, and wrote local interest articles for several local newspapers. She was a charter member of The Friends of the Nappanee Public Library.

Surviving are a daughter, Carol (and spouse Randy) Weddle, Anchorage, Alaska; two sons, Douglas (and spouse Kim) Hoffer, Batavia, Ill., and David (and spouse Shirley) Hoffer, Goshen; three grandsons; and a sister, Wilma (and spouse Joseph) Dunnuck, Fort Wayne. She was preceded in death by a sister and a brother.

A procession will gather at Thompson-Lengacher & Yoder Funeral Home, Nappanee, for graveside services at 11 a.m. Saturday at Union Center Cemetery. There will be cremation.

No calling is planned.
