Healing Time

Editor, Times-Union:

Thank you, Janice Nelson, Joshua Bartman and Janet Ecklebarger for your beautiful letters on Friday. I am so glad that I lived to see the election to president of a great man, and look forward to the changing energy of our nation.

I grew up in the South so I saw first hand how people of color were treated. I can still see the old rundown school that the (colored kids) had to attend as I rode on the bus to my new white school. I thank God that my parents never taught me to hate as many were taught in the South, and that I was taught that everyone has value.

Sixty years ago when my mother died and my dad had three children under 8 to take care of and all family members on both sides of the family never offered to help, it was a black woman named Susy that brought food to our door and offered to watch us for free while my Dad worked. My sisters have told me over the years how she would hold and rock me when I looked and called for my mom, as I was only 2 years old. I do not remember Susy, but I will never forget her love and kindness to me. This is a great healing time for our nation.
