On June 5, 1991, Habitat for Humanity of Kosciusko County was established.
Now, after 35 years, its leadership and supporters celebrate the homes built and lives changed, according to a provided news release.
“Our board and staff are extremely grateful for the vision and foresight of those original founders” said Roberto Perez-de-Frias, Habitat’s board president. “With our nation’s current housing crisis, it is even more important that we continue building upon that vision to make affordable homeownership a reality for Kosciusko families.”
In that time, Habitat built 34 affordable homes for local families, with two more homes in progress and another two families waiting to break ground. In total, these homes have housed 139 people (53 adults and 86 kids). All of this is made possible by the thousands of donors and supporters over the years, the release states.
“Just in the last five years alone, we have had 1,082 volunteers give more than 22,000 hours. We’ve also had over 1,000 donors during that same stretch,” said Ben Logan, Habitat’s director. “This work, now on the home stretch of its fourth decade, is only possible because of the generous Kosciusko community.”
As well as building more new homes, Habitat looks forward to its newly launch Home Repair Program and further collaboration with the community to increase access to affordable housing.
