Editor, Times-Union: The slaughter on the college campus in Oregon has many reasons for happening. The gunman hated Christians and targeted them. He also wanted to make a name for himself. He knew he’d meet no armed resistance. Gun-free zones tell people bent on murder it’s open season on future gun victims. Why else would someone drive past movie theaters where people might be armed to find one that could be turned into a shooting gallery? The destruction of the family has made gangs families for many. One of the biggest reasons for gun violence is an absence of spiritual values and morality. Rarely do Christians who honor Christ shoot others to death. Christians don’t lop off the heads of people who refuse to become Christians like servants of Satan do to those who refuse to convert to Islam. A friend suggested that secular morality instead of Christian morality should be taught in schools. Secular morality allows people to do evil if they believe they are doing right. Secular moralists brought us the Holocaust and today tell people to do whatever makes them feel good. Jack the Ripper thought he was doing London society a service by killing prostitutes just like people who support the extermination of the unborn believe they are improving society. After mass shootings, people insist we need more restrictive gun laws. Armed gang members shoot people, yet we don’t hear people demand police to disarm the gangs. Gun confiscation in England and Australia hasn’t stopped gun violence in those countries. Did the assault weapons ban in this country keep criminals from obtaining assault weapons? Liberals attack the Second Amendment. They don’t realize it allows citizens to protect themselves from oppressive governments and invading forces. When Nazi Germany disarmed the citizens, they couldn’t oppose the dictates of Hitler. Liberal cities keep their citizens disarmed and criminals with guns take advantage of that fact. Most liberals oppose the death penalty for murderers who impose the death penalty upon the innocent. Before guns were invented, people still used weapons to kill others. If there were no guns, people would still kill others. A slit throat can kill someone like a bullet to the head can only slower. If God changes the hearts and minds of people, gun violence will decrease dramatically. If the commandment thou shalt not murder were a moral stop sign in the minds of everyone gun violence might become rare. If loving your neighbor as mush as you loved yourself became a common practice, the world would become a better place to live in. Rick Badman Warsaw
