Gregory ‘Greg’ ‘Grouchy Greg’ Allan Shafer

Gregory “Greg” Allan Shafer, also known as “Grouchy Greg,” 59, of Claypool, passed away unexpectedly surrounded by family on Friday, April 24, 2026, while in the care of Tobey Hospital in Wareham, Mass.
He was born on Dec. 19, 1966, in Warsaw, to Linda Lyons Shafer and Benjamin Robert Shafer. A lifetime resident of Kosciusko County, Greg was a 1985 graduate of Warsaw Community High School.
Greg married Claudia Campbell on Aug. 27, 2016. He worked at Zimmer Biomet of Warsaw for 37 years.
Known by many as “Grouchy Greg,” he had a passion for NASCAR, hockey, and ham radio. He was actively involved in CERT and served as the AuxCom Coordinator for the Kosciusko County EMA. Despite his nickname, Greg had a heart of gold and was always willing to help others.
He is survived by his wife, Claudia Shafer, of Claypool; his son, Christopher Shafer; two sisters, Wonnie Shafer (Phil Bracken), of Frostproof, Fla.; and Stefanie (Andrew) Spangle, of Warsaw; his bonus daughters, Amanda Bottomley (fiancé, Nick Westfall), Andrea (Chase) Hodges and Jessica (Ryan) Bainbridge; his granddaughter, Lillian Shafer; his bonus grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews who will miss him dearly.
He was preceded in death by his mother, Linda Shafer, in 2009; his father, Ben Shafer, in 2022; sister, Bonnie Lyons Misener, in 2012; his granddaughter, Bailey, in 2016; and two nieces, Lyndsay Allison (Poe) Sanchez in 2011 and Katie Hoffert in 2014.
Family and friends may visit from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m. on Wednesday, April 29 at Redpath-Fruth Funeral Home, 225 Argonne Road, Warsaw. Greg’s life will be celebrated at 9 a.m. on Thursday, April 30 at Redpath-Fruth Funeral Home and officiated by JC Sparks. A graveside service will follow at Oakwood Cemetery in Warsaw.
