Your News Views in Saturday's paper was excellent. My only regret - it was not in big headlines across the front page of the paper. Big enough for everyone to see and realize the urgency of what is happening to us by the legislators of this state.
I agree that most people think a "cap" is good, no one wants taxes growing higher and higher each year. But without the assessment being capped, then the 1 percent to homeowners can grow by your assessment being adjusted - whenever our legislators want more money.
Two percent for rental property sounds decent - just pass along that increase to your renters. Right? Well, having rentals myself with the economic conditions and lack of jobs - my renters are having difficulty just meeting the current rents. Additional rent is not a possibility.
Then the one that really affects many in this rural area is the 3 percent of assessed valuation for business property. Farm land falls in this category. Land that does not use your schools, fire and police services, and most of the taxing units.
So what's "fair and equitable" about these three situations? I understand that "fair and equitable" is in the Indiana Constitution. Do our legislators not take an oath to uphold the Constitution? Since they voted last session, and I understand that a vote on this will be taken soon in this session, are they not doing something unconstitutional?
Seems pretty evident that they are - or they would not be trying to amend the Constitution.
I urge everyone to contact your legislator and voice your disgust for passing illegal legislation.
