SYRACUSE – Gene Bartels, 78, North Webster, passed away March 22, 2015, at his residence. He was born March 6, 1937, in Garrett, to Chester and Helen Griswold Bartels. On Nov. 22, 1958, he married Barbara Crow, who survives in North Webster. They were married 56 years. He was a member of Calvary United Methodist Church, Syracuse, as well as the American Legion Post #253, having served in the U.S. Army Reserve. He retired after 18 years as the maintenance director of Epworth Forest Conference Center. He enjoyed gardening, word puzzles, newspapers and woodworking. Also surviving are two sons, Randy Bartels, Indianapolis, and Mike Bartels, Golden, Colo.; one granddaughter, Madison Bartels, Indianapolis; two grandsons, Baley Bartels, Indianapolis, and Degan Bartels, Golden; one sister, Linda (and spouse Denny) Danes, Garrett; and one brother, Wayne (and spouse Pat) Bartels, Garrett. He was preceded in death by his parents and an infant daughter, Deborah Bartels, who died in 1965. Services will be at 11 a.m. Thursday at Eastlund Funeral Home, Syracuse.
