Whether you’re a fan of Sonic the Hedgehog, Spider-Man or another comic book hero, you’re likely to find them Saturday, May 2 at Chimp’s Comix, 919 E. Winona Ave., Warsaw, for Free Comic Book Day.
Hours are 10 a.m. to 6 p.m.
Chimp’s owner Nick Kelley explained, “Basically, you can come in, choose a free comic out of a select group of comics that we’ll have available, some from previous years, some from the current year. You can get two free per person, as long as they’re different ones. If you would like additional ones, then we ask for a donation of a non-perishable food item to our local Salvation Army, who will be here for that.”
Each item gets you an additional comic, so if you bring in 20 items, you’ll leave with 22 comics.
This year, there will be over 100 comics to choose from, with 39 of them new for this year. Some of those are Sonic the Hedgehog, a D.C. Vs. Sonic the Hedgehog, D.C. Next Level, Masters of the Universe, Amazing Spider-Man, Avengers, Supernatural, Street Fighter, Stitch, Garfield, Power Rangers, Avatar and “all kinds of different choices,” Kelley said.
There are a “bunch” of all-ages comics, including 12 new ones for this year.
It’s all “to encourage reading,” he stated. “Basically, show the enjoyment of the hobby so that new people might give comics a try with no investment.”
This is the 22nd Free Comic Book Day at Chimp’s and the 21st year the business has collected food items for The Salvation Army in conjunction with the annual event. Every year, between 1,500 and 2,000 non-perishable food items are donated.
“Usually, it’s busier for the first half of the day and the second half of the day quiets down, depending on how many books are still left and how much of a line people are willing to wait in,” Kelley said.
As far as which comics he thinks will go quickly, he guessed the D.C. Vs. Sonic, The Avengers, Sonic the Hedgehog and maybe Avatar.
As part of Free Comic Book Day, Chimp’s Comix also will be having a sale: 35% off comic back issues, 25% off new graphic novels (TPBS), 20% off comic sets, all 50-cent comics are 20 cents each and all $1 books are 30 for $20.
