SYRACUSE - Fred Self Byland, 79, of Milford, died at 6:45 p.m. March 6, 2010, in Miller's Merry Manor, Syracuse.

He was born March 15, 1930, in Warsaw, to Nelson and Elnora Louise Self Byland. On June 10, 1952, in Nahunta, Ga., he married Geraldine Ann "Gerry" Tharp, who survives.

He graduated from Syracuse High School in 1949, and attended Bradley University, Peoria, Ill., for two years. He served in the U.S. Air Force during the Korean War.

He returned to the Syracuse area from Fort Wayne in 1968, and was co-owner of Byland Jewelers, Syracuse, for 26 years. He formerly worked at Baber's Jewelry, Fort Wayne. He was a member of St. Andrews United Methodist Church, Syracuse, and a former member of the Syracuse Lions and Masonic Lodge.

Also surviving are two daughters, Susan (and spouse David) Kaminski, Angola, and Julie (and spouse Thomas), Votaw, Fort Wayne; six grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; and two brothers, James Byland, Everson, Wash., and Nelson Louis (and spouse Janet) Byland, Sebring, Fla. He was preceded in death by a daughter and two brothers.

A memorial service will be at noon Saturday at St. Andrew's United Methodist Church, Syracuse, with the Rev. Mark Eastway officiating. Burial will be in Syracuse Cemetery.

Calling is from 10 a.m. to noon Saturday at the church.

Owen Family Funeral Home, Syracuse, is in charge of arrangements.
