SOUTH WHITLEY - Floyd R. Brandenburg, 83, of South Whitley, died at 6 p.m. Aug. 29, 2009, in his residence, surrounded by his family.

He was born Sept. 9, 1925, in Whitley County, to William and Jennie Freeman Brandenburg. On March 7, 1947, he married Doris L. Bishop, who survives.

He attended South Whitley High School. On Nov. 29, 1943, he was inducted into the U.S. Army where he served in the 264th Medical Battalion in the Pacific Theater during the battle of New Guinea, Northern Solomons and Luzon. He was honorably discharged Feb. 3, 1946. He worked at the former Gripco, South Whitley, for 39 years and spent most of his career as the night superintendent. He was a life member and past commander of Veterans of Foreign Wars 2919, South Whitley.

Also surviving are five children: Thomas W. Brandenburg, Fort Wayne; Judith A. Hall, Yakima, Wash.; Terry L. (and spouse Priscilla) Brandenburg, South Whitley; William C. (and spouse Elizabeth) Brandenburg, North Manchester; and Jeanna (and spouse John) Moore, Pierceton; 12 grandchildren; 19 great-grandchildren; and a sister, Joan Willard, Pierceton. He was preceded in death by a sister.

Services will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday at Smith & Sons Miller Chapel, South Whitley, with Rev. JP Freeman officiating. Burial will be in the South Whitley Cemetery with military honors by member of VFW 2919.

Calling is from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. Tuesday at the funeral home.
