Flooding

Posted
I recently, with a great deal of interest, read the letter to the editor from Linda Berger on "CR100 and Flooding."
My attention was for the flooding part of her letter.
At the outset, let me be brutally frank about my feelings. In my opinion we should telescope the DNR into the U.N. building in New York, add a generous portion of a thousand or so Canadian geese for flavor. We could also add a few clams (although I don't really have bad feelings for clams). Then we should hire earth movers and shove the U.N. building into the Atlantic ocean, never to be heard from again. Both the DNR and the U.N. are, in my opinion, totally useless and harmful organizations.
About 20 years ago the Tippecanoe River was cleaned out. Now if the clams survived this and are still present today then why can't we clean the river out again? The answer is probably money. But if that is so how do we explain the recent (in the last couple of months) actions of our illustrious governor who took the money from boat tax (lake enhancement - $20 per boat from every boat owner in Indiana) and moved it into the General Fund (most probably never to be heard from again)?
I think the clams is just another excuse for the DNR to do nothing really constructive.
If anyone would like to see what's in store as a result of this high water, take a look at a house at the extreme end of Sechrist Lake (can be seen from South Barbee Road). This house is seven cement blocks high from ground level. The only way this guy can get his car in and out of the garage is to put in an elevator.
Looking around from where I am typing this letter there is not one house on Little Barbee Lake that would be livable with a four-foot flood level (which is what I hear DNR is advocating).
Oh well, I'll clam up and wish everyone a merry Christmas - except I'll save a few bah humbugs for the DNR.
