Flooding

Posted
Editor, Times-Union:

Once again we've endured a flood of great magnitude, and as usual many home owners were not prepared.

Here in the city of Warsaw we are so fortunate for all the volunteers who donated their time. This includes time to fill sandbags, time to help homeowners shore up their homes and any other talents you so freely gave.

Thanks to Medtronic who allowed workers to leave work to fill sandbags. Thanks also to the World Compassion Network for all their help and the Kemrad volunteers who were manning the barricades day and night, especially Bill and Shannon. These are only a few that I know who helped. There are hundreds of others who gave so much and our heartfelt thanks go out to all of you.

I wish those who criticize the street department could have walked in those employees' shoes. They worked diligently until nearly midnight on Sunset Drive delivering sandbags. Lacy has great foresight for this kind of emergency and an awesome crew working long, hard hours. We could call at 2 a.m. and order sandbags and knew they would be here first thing the next morning.

In spite of all these wonderful people, we were again plagued with those inconsiderate nosy people who have nothing better to do than move the barricades that say "Road Closed" and drive through high water causing even more damage. These barricades are put up to protect us against you. If the street is flooded and you don't live here, aren't bringing supplies or offering any kind of assistance, stay out. Even though Kemrad was here from the beginning they couldn't always be at both ends of the street. After five days of you inconsiderate morons and numerous calls to the police, we were finally given some assistance by Officer Hunter at both ends of Sunset Drive. So many drove around, over or through the barricades the police finally started issuing tickets.

When we are fighting with all we have to save our homes, up all night to keep the pumps running and filled with gas for days on end, our nerves have had it and our tempers are short. If you want to see how high the water is, we have pictures. Ask, we will gladly supply you with them.

And last but not least, to the kid who thought you were so smart using the circle drive to go around the barricades and drove through the water like a bat out of hell, I hope your ticket was worth it 'cuz it sure made my day.
