July 4th is quickly approaching, and what a great time to remember our troops and veterans among us.
From July 3-12, Akron will be hosting a Field of Honor. This is a great way to honor your veterans and support our local troops who are currently overseas or serving right here near us. The Field of Honor is a "field" of American flags flown together in support of our men and women who are currently serving or who have served our great country. While living near Fort Bragg, I was honored to have a flag flown in memory of my husband who died while serving our country in Iraq this past September. A similar field there flew 1,200 flags. It was amazing. My goal for this year is to see 100 flags flying in Akron where the field will be erected.
You can be a part by simply sponsoring a flag. A ribbon noting the sponsor's name as well as the veteran will be attached to each 3 x 5 flag. Each flag costs $25 and will fly from July 3 through July 12. After that, the sponsor can pick up his/her flag or leave it to be donated to local schools.
All proceeds will be divided between the Nick Patterson Memorial Fund, a fund established with the help of the Northern Indiana Community Foundation to provide scholarships for sports camps, and the Wounded Warriors Project. This project's mission is to honor and empower wounded warriors, seeks to raise awareness, enlists the public's aid for the needs of severely injured service men and women, and provides unique, direct programs and services to meet their needs.
If you would like to sponsor a flag in honor of or in memory of that special veteran in your life, or to sponsor a flag in support of our troops, simply call or write to me at the number and address listed below. The public is invited to visit the Field of Honor anytime during July 3 through July 12 at Akron Elementary School.
