Endorsement Of Jackson

Posted

Editor, Times-Union:
I recently had an extended and productive conversation with Brad Jackson, who is seeking the Republican caucus nomination for the at-large county council seat vacated by DeLynn Geiger. We covered several important topics, and I wanted to share my impressions of his philosophy on local government.
Key points from our discussion:
1) Retirement and Return to Public Service
Brad explained that after more than 20 years as a county commissioner, he retired because the role is demanding and time-intensive. While he remains deeply committed to serving the community, he believes the council position offers a meaningful way to continue contributing with a somewhat less demanding schedule, and that it has been a long-held goal.
2) Approach to Growth
Addressing broader questions about conservative principles and fiscal restraint, Brad emphasized his strong support for quality, thoughtful growth — not growth for its own sake. He is committed to balanced development that benefits the county without unnecessary spending or overreach.
3) Airport and Community Impact
Although I didn't directly ask his opinion about an Airport Authority, Brad expressed a clear understanding of the airport's value and its positive economic and community-wide impact.
4) SB1 and Upcoming Tax Realignment
I shared my concerns about the challenges ahead due to SB1, including our projected revenue losses. Brad expressed a willingness to collaborate closely with the city on the state-mandated tax realignment to help mitigate these impacts.
While I'm sure Brad and I will have differences on issues in the future, we found complete alignment on all the topics we discussed today. His extensive knowledge, experience, and proven track record make him exceptionally well-qualified to serve as a county council member.
Based on our conversation, I am pleased to offer my full endorsement of Brad Jackson for the remaining term of the at-large seat vacated by DeLynn Geiger.
