PLYMOUTH - Elizabeth "Betty" Stofer Stewart, 92, of 1409 Camelot Drive, Winona Lake, died at 6:44 p.m. April 13, 2009, in Lutheran Hospital of Indiana, Fort Wayne.
She was born April 6, 1917, in Highland Park, Mich., to Harrison and Annette Kuhn Stofer. On Sept. 4, 1950, in Highland Park, she married David Stewart, who survives.
She was a graduate of Highland Park High School, Michigan, and received a bachelor's degree from Wayne State University and a master's degree from the University of Michigan. She was an elementary school teacher at Gross Point Michigan and Farmington Hills Michigan. Moving to Plymouth in 1955, she was a released time religious educator and worked with homebound students in Plymouth. She was a member of the Salvation Army Auxiliary, Warsaw; PEO Home Extension Club, where she received the "Jan" Award; served as president of the Parkview Hospital Auxiliary; and served on local, district and conference levels of United Methodist Church and United Methodist Women. She was a volunteer for the probation department in Plymouth, and started the Disabilities Administration Commission for the United Methodist Church.
Also surviving are a sister-in-law, Evelyn Stofer, Warsaw; a nephew, Dr. William B. (and spouse Jenny) Stofer, Warsaw; and two great-nephews, Harrison A. and Jacob B. Stofer, both of Warsaw. She was recently preceded in death by a brother, William H. "Bill" Stofer.
Services will be at 11 a.m. Friday at First United Methodist Church, 400 N. Michigan St., Plymouth, with the Rev. Dr. E. Dean Fager officiating. Burial will be in New Oak Hill Cemetery, Plymouth.
Calling is from 10 a.m. to noon Thursday at Redpath-Fruth Funeral Home, 225 Argonne Road, Warsaw; from 3 to 7 p.m. Thursday at Van Gilder Funeral Home, 300 W. Madison St., Plymouth; and one hour prior to the service Friday at the church.
