One of the drivers involved in a midday two-car crash Friday has died.
The driver, Robert D. Walters, 84, West Old 30, Warsaw, was taken to Kosciusko Community Hospital after the accident by Lutheran EMS ambulance where it was reported he died. His obituary appears in today’s edtion.
The accident happened at about 12:26 p.m. Friday at the intersection of Lake City Highway (U.S. 30) and Silveus Crossing (CR 150W), Warsaw.
A Warsaw Police Department accident report states that when the investigating officer arrived, Walters was being treated by Lutheran EMS.
The driver of the other car involved in the accident, Taylor R. Zebell, 19, South Bend, said she was westbound on Lake City Highway in her 2004 Chrysler Sebring approaching the intersection of Silveus Crossing. She said she had a green traffic light to proceed through the intersection. As she approached the intersection, she said the other car involved in the accident – a 2010 Smart car driven by Walters – turned left in front of her from the eastbound lane of Lake City Highway. Zebell said she attempted to slow down but was unable to avoid the collision. The front end of her car hit the passenger side of Walter’s car.
Zebell complained of pain to her right leg but refused medical attention at the scene. She was taken to KCH for a consensual legal blood draw due to the accident involving a fatality.
A witness driving east on Lake City Highway behind Walters’ car said she stopped behind his car in the left-hand turn to go north on Silveus Crossing. She said Walters stopped at the red traffic light for a short period of time but then proceeded to turn left while the light was still red. His car turned into the path of Zebell’s car, which was westbound on Lake City Highway, causing the collision. She said Walters’ car flipped one time and came to rest in the westbound lane of Lake City Highway.
Four other witnesses were in the same vehicle stopped at a red traffic light on the south side of the intersection, facing northbound. All four had the same account of the crash in that Walters turned northbound on Silveus Crossing from Lake City Highway, and that Zebell was going west on Lake City Highway. They were unable to attest to which vehicle had the right of way.
