Debates Not All That

Posted
Editor, Times-Union:
I am continually amazed at the number of voters who think debates will provide the answers to all our concerns.
On Feb. 22, 2011, Democratic legislators fled to Illinois. On that Tuesday, a bill was coming to the statehouse for a vote on union fees. The Democrats wanted non-union members to pay fees to unions for representation. They knew this bill wouldn’t pass, so they fled. Of the 40 Democratic legislators, only two showed up for work.
I’m sure these fleeing Democratic legislators were good debaters. Most candidates are smart enough to know what the voters want to hear. That doesn’t prevent them from following party lines once they are elected.
