Days Of Rain Leave Flooding Behind

Days Of Rain Leave Flooding BehindDays of rainfall and a forecast for the same have resulted in flooding throughout the county.

Kosciusko County Highway Superintendent Steve Moriarty said as of Tuesday afternoon, six county roads were closed due to high water: County Farm Road from CR 1200S to Ind. 14; CR 300E from CR 600S to CR 700S; Sellers Lake from Woodland to Lake Shore; CR 500N from CR 75E to CR 100E; CR 950E from W-17 to Backwater; and CR 500S from Ind. 15 to CR 200W.

“The water hasn’t really receded like we thought it would, and it’s still raining, too,” Moriarty said. He said his department has about 50 different areas that have high water signs up.

Jeff Beeler, superintendent of Warsaw Street Department, said citizens who need sand bags can call the street department Monday through Friday from 7 a.m. to 4 p.m. at 574-372-9561 for delivery. People can request as many sand bags or pallettes of sand bags that they think they may need.

Beeler’s department has also closed off Hand Avenue between Ind. 25 and Center Street as of Tuesday afternoon. Areas affected by high water are Little Eagle, Arthur Street, Country Club Lane and Country Club Lane Extended and Ireland Drive.

“The water is still rising, not at a rapid pace, but it’s still rising,” he said. “I think there could be some concerns potentially, but we’ll see what Mother Nature has in store.”

Ed Rock, director of Kosciusko County Emergency Management, said he anticipates some water issues around Tippecanoe and James lakes before the rain is all over with, and that he’s heard there is some water in Winona Lake around houses.

National Weather Service North Webster Office Meteorologist Patrick Murphy said rainfall totals from the past 72 hours up until 7 a.m. Tuesday were: Warsaw: 3.75”; Claypool: 2.55”; Cromwell: 2.48”; Syracuse: 2.46”; North Webster: 2.44”; Leesburg: 2.25”; and Milford at 1.90”.

Rainfall totals for Winona Lake was not data Murphy had, but said he predicts it’s been between 2.5” and 3”.

The rain and drizzle tapered off overnight Tuesday and the forecast calls for dry conditions until Saturday, Murphy said.
