Davenport Takes Athlete Of The WeekWarsaw’s defense came up big in helping the Tigers to a win over Penn Friday night for the first-ever football sectional crown for the home team.
Senior Parker Davenport was the leading tackler and forced a fumble, enough for him to be names the Times-Union Athlete of the Week for Nov. 4-9.
Davenport, often fighting off multiple blockers, was credited with five solo tackles, 10 assists and a tackle for loss in the 35-18 victory over the Kingsmen; among the biggest wins in Tiger football history. His forced fumble came late in the game and after Mario Corts recovered, Penn’s last gasp drive came to an end.
With the victory the No. 12 Tigers (9-2) advanced to Friday’s 6A Regional game at No. 4 Merrillville (10-1). Kickoff is set for 7:30 p.m. Eastern time. With a victory, Warsaw would host a semistate game Nov. 22.
