Crash Report Provides Update On Wednesday’s U.S. 30 AccidentAn accident report filed by the Kosciusko County Sheriff’s Office has provided more information on Wednesday’s two-vehicle crash that injured four people.

The incident occurred at about 1:19 p.m. Wednesday at the intersection of U.S. 30 and CR 325E.

According to the report, Gary L. Berger, 77, Plymouth, was westbound in a 2014 Ford Econoline van on U.S. 30. Berger stated there were three vehicles crossing U.S. 30 from the south. He said the first two crossed U.S. 30 with plenty of room, and he thought the third vehicle - a 2001 GMC Yukon driven by Evelyn Powers, 45, Pierceton - was going to stop. The Yukon crossed the westbound lane in the path of Berger’s van and Berger was unable to avoid colliding with the Yukon.

The van spun around and came to rest, backed in the guardrail located on the northwest corner of the intersection.

The Yukon was hit and sent over the guardrail situated at the northwest corner of the intersection. It rolled down a large hill, coming to rest on its wheels.

Powers was partially trapped in the driver’s seat. One passenger, Ethen R. Gardner, 21, Pierceton, was ejected from the vehicle and found in the grass about 10 yards from the driver’s door. The second passenger, Shawnee J. Smalley, 23, Pierceton, was found in the rear trunk area of the SUV, the report states. The report states neither passenger were wearing seat belts at the time of the accident.

Berger was taken to Lutheran Hospital in Fort Wayne by ambulance for further medical evaluation.

Powers was taken to Parkview Hospital in Fort Wayne by ambulance for further medical evaluation.

Smalley and Gardner were taken to Parkview Hospital by helicopter for further medical evaluation. The report states Gardner had minor facial injuries, while Smalley complained of pain.

Total damages were estimated at over $50,000.
