This letter is in response to Janet Wagley's letter on 6/5/08 concerning the CR 250 project.
Correct me if I am wrong, but this project has been going on for approximately one year now. Phend & Brown completed the south end of the project to allow the residents of Heritage Lake and Lexington Manor to have access to the rest of the world via Pierceton Road. I don't understand, with the mess north of LCA, why anyone, whether there were signs posted or not (most people ignore road closed and construction signage anyhow), would even attempt to try to drive through the area.
As a contractor who works in the road, I can tell you from personal experience that drivers do not read construction signs. We had the northbound lane of Park Avenue at Arthur closed with signs saying road closed for two blocks north of where we were working to prevent vehicles from driving in the opposite lane. Virtually every vehicle, including a Kosciusko County deputy, drove past the signs into oncoming traffic. Steve Brown, with the WPD, did make one driver turn around when she drove around the signs. The same occurred in the 900 block of South Union Street two weeks ago with a KCSD officer driving around the signs.
Just because the road isn't "closed" doesn't mean you can or should drive through. Signs aren't meant to inconvenience, but to protect the public and workers. Instead of criticizing the "two-legged" worker, give them some room and respect for what they do. But then again, that takes common sense.
