I continue to be amazed at the lack of common courtesy in neighborhoods, in public, on our streets and highways. For example, I was taught that when someone holds the door open for you, you say, "thank you," and if there is more than one door, you say, "thank you" again. Likewise, if you are the one holding the door, you respond with a "you're welcome" to both.
While I myself verbalize one or the other depending on the situation, 50 percent of the time I get nothing in response to my actions or words.
Also, what is up with people who own dogs and consistently allow them to bark uncontrollably for extended periods of time with no concern for their neighbors? I realize dogs' natural instinct is to bark at other animals and at strangers, etc., but what I refer to is spastic barking at nothing with the dog owners either oblivious to this noise or who just don't care.
Then there are the people who decide to ride their motor bikes or 4-wheelers on trails in the woods after midnight and into the wee hours of the morning (with no mufflers), and don't think people who live within a mile radius aren't awakened or disturbed by the noise their total disregard to how it might affect the sleep for the people who live close by. Do they really think that no one can hear them? I would bet that if I decided to drive back and forth in front of their home revving my engine or playing my car stereo with sub woofer speakers vibrating like I'm deaf at 1 a.m. that they would be the first to their door asking me what the heck I was doing at such an ungodly hour, disturbing them.
We live in what I would call a semi-rural housing addition and our home has a field to the rear and woods around our property. I have been told by the KCSD that the county has no noise ordinance; the only options are talking to the offending party or asking the sheriff to do it for you. Unfortunately, as tolerant a person as I try to be, I have resorted to asking the sheriff for help. Whether the offenders listen beyond the moment - well, myself and my neighbors can only hope. And the way some people on the road are oblivious to others? I'm sure we all see that several times a day.
Why can't we all recognize that as human beings, I think that we all basically want the same things, and while we can't always do exactly what we'd like to do exactly when we want to do it, if we recognize that the people around us most likely experience the same feelings, then why shouldn't showing compassion, courtesy, and common sense be the motto of our daily lives; everyone's daily lives.
