Editor, Times-Union: I have enjoyed reading the letters to the editor. Before this chatter about Jeff Plank goes too much further, a correction needs to be made concerning Ms. Arnold's comments. She obviously didn't go far enough in her research as her conclusion is not correct. Jeff never lost an election. As I recall, in the late ’70s Jeff wanted to get involved in local politics. He went to the GOP county chairman and asked to get involved. He was told there were no positions available. He then went to the Democratic county chairman and he was encouraged to run against the Republican councilman, Mr. Burns, whom he defeated. He served a couple of terms on the council and then decided to run for mayor. I specifically remember as I was one of the individuals who went with Jeff to the court house to file for mayor as a Republican. Jeff served four terms as mayor and did an amazing job. So, Ms. Arnold, there never was this amazing transformation you referenced. He came from an active Republican family from Northeast Indiana and served the community well using his conservative values. Finally, I want to commend the Times-Union for raising the word limit on letters to at least the 702-word limit, that must be the new norm.
