Winona Literary Club Met
WINONA LAKE – Winona Literary Club met on Wednesday at 1:30 p.m. at the Robin Hood Community Center in Winona Lake.
There were 17 members present and 16 guests. The theme this year is “Life is a Journey, Travel it Well!” In keeping with this theme, the club has had many speakers and musicians this fall.
The Grace Village Choir was the featured musical performance. Rose Marie Henning, the director, introduced the group. She said Wednesday’s performance would be half of the Christmas program they are presenting this year at the Grace Village Carol Sing in the Chapel next Friday, and that everyone in the community is welcome to come and enjoy the entire program Friday at 6 p.m. That whole program will include a prelude (starting at 5:45 p.m.), duets on piano and organ with Maxine Currie and Bill Schaefer, scripture readings, choral numbers and sing-along Christmas songs from the club meeting. The performance started with a hymn sing-along, "Tell me the story of Jesus," scripture reading and a choir performance of "To a Maiden Engaged to Joseph." In this way, sing-alongs, scripture, interesting christmas trivia and choir numbers were performed. Both familiar and new Christmas choir numbers were sung.
Carol Volkers then gave short book reviews on three books: "The Unfinished Gift" by Dan Walsh, "The Miracles Among Us" by Dr. Marc Siegel and "Christ, The Ultimate Gift" by Dr. Criswell Freeman. She started by quoting three Christmas poems from "Guideposts Christmas Treasury" of 1988.
Afterward, there was a short business meeting with the reading of the minutes from the previous club meeting, followed by the treasurer's report. Hostesses served slices of three decadent cheesecake flavors, little peppermint bark pretzels and nuts. Tables were decorated with Christmas decor and beautiful nativities from all around the world.
The fall season of the Winona Literary Club has now ended and will resume again in the spring. The next meeting will take place March 4 at 1:30 p.m. at the Robin Hood Community Center in Winona Lake. The featured speaker will be Rita Price Simpson. She is honored as the first women's basketball on-air announcer in Indiana and was inducted into the Indiana Hall of Fame in 2004. She is the only broadcaster to call every girls state championship tournament and every boys state championship tournament since 1977. She is the recipient of the IHSAA Distinguished Service Award, the IBCA Virgil Sweet Service Award, the Marion Archer Service Award, the Marvin Wood Memorial Award and the Indiana Sports Equity Pioneer Model Award. Her talk is titled, "How Time Flies! Broadcasting over 6,000 Girls' Basketball Games!" If you are interested and would like to come, RSVP to Marcia Lee by calling 574-527-7687 and leaving a message by Feb. 28.
The Winona Literary Club has been an ongoing women's club since 1903. It meets biweekly, six times in the fall and six times in the spring. This is not your typical book club; instead, it offers opportunities to enjoy book reviews, listen to performances by talented musicians and hear talks from local business owners and special speakers, such as government officials or education personnel. A brief club business meeting is conducted afterward, followed by an informal time of friendly chatting and refreshments. All women of the community are welcome to join. They have a Facebook page at Winona Literary Club - Est. 1903.
