Winona Literary Club Met
WINONA LAKE – The Winona Literary Club met on Wednesday at 1:30 p.m. at the Robin Hood Community Center in Winona Lake. There were 22 members present and two guests. The theme this year is “Life is a Journey, Travel it Well!” In keeping with this theme, the club has had many speakers and musicians this fall.
Brady Peters from Warsaw was the featured speaker on Wednesday. He is a division engineer for the Southern Engineering Region with OmniTrax. Peters has over 26 years of experience in the railroad industry and engineering. He oversees $60+ million in working capital for the railroad, focusing on safety, time management, quality and standards. He oversees 13 railroads in the region, with approximately 650 miles of operation. Peters' love of railroads has led him to investigate the history of the Winona Interurban Railroad, which operated at the beginning of the 20th century. This piece of history was prompted by the growth of the Chautauqua and Winona Lake Assembly in 1902. Thousands were drawn to this area in those early years by evangelists such as Billy Sunday and J. W. Chapman. Peters explained and drew up a timeline of the railroad's development, its connections, the complications that plagued its birth and growth, and what led to its demise. Peters also showed slides of the Winona train cars and of rare train memorabilia. During the question-and-answer time afterward, he expressed emotion for a family member who had introduced him to the field. The ladies asked numerous questions.
Afterward, there was a short business meeting with the reading of the minutes from the previous club meeting, followed by the treasurer's report. Hostesses served homemade pumpkin bars, and tables were decorated for fall with little pilgrim figurines.
The next and final meeting of this year will take place Dec. 3 at 1:30 p.m. at the Robin Hood Community Center in Winona Lake. The featured musical performance will be by the Grace Village Choir, led by Director Rose Marie Henning. This 15 to 20 member choir has been delighting audiences in Grace Village and the community since 2007. They perform monthly at the Grace Village Chapel and give two special performances (Christmas and Easter) each year. Ladies, come and join them for a celebration of the Christmas season. If you are interested and would like to come, RSVP to Marcia by calling 574-527-7687 and leaving a message by Nov. 29.
The Winona Literary Club has been an ongoing women's club since 1903. It meets biweekly, six times in the fall and six times in the spring. This is not your typical book club; instead, it offers opportunities to enjoy engaging book reviews, listen to performances by talented musicians, and hear talks from local business owners and special speakers, such as government officials or education personnel. A brief club business meeting is conducted afterward, followed by an informal time of friendly chatting and refreshments. All women of the community are welcome to join. They now have a Facebook page at Winona Literary Club - Est. 1903.
