Child Support

Editor, Times-Union:

I would like to tell you a story. For privacy purposes I will use false names.

This story starts several years ago. John Doe was a fine upstanding citizen and excellent father. He loved to tuck his daughter, Judy, into bed each night, watch her joy as she played with a new toy he had bought her, listen to her sing her favorite songs when they came on the radio, see her smile and jump into his arms when he came home from work.

Unfortunately, Mr. Doe and his wife divorced. They had all of the court-ordered visitation and child support drawn up. Mr. Doe has consistently paid that child support.

That was 13-1/2 years ago. He has not seen his daughter or even heard her voice in 13-1/2 years because his ex-wife decided to break her court order and has not allowed him visitation. He has tried to go through all of the proper channels to get the visitation order enforced yet nothing has ever been done.

Mr. Doe suffers daily without his little Judy, who is now not so little anymore. She is now going through all of her teen changes without her father. She cannot come to daddy when a boy has broken her heart. She cannot ask daddy to teach her to drive her first car. She cannot even argue with daddy when he thinks she needs to put on more clothes before she goes out with friends. How can any loving mother deny a child her father? And what's worse is the courts will not step in to force this woman to give Mr. Doe and his daughter that visitation time they need.

Mr. Doe is not trying to take his daughter away from the mother. All he wants is the opportunity to be a part of his daughter's life. He has religiously paid his support all of these years because he wants the best for his daughter. He has tried many times to call just to say hi to his daughter and been denied that simple request. He has asked for just a picture so he can at least see his daughter grow. No pictures have come.

Now, to all of the parents who are reading this, could you imagine your life without your child? Imagine for just one minute what your life would be like if you could not even see a picture of your children for 13-1/2 years.

Do you want to help this man and his daughter? You can by supporting my petition.

This is a real story and it broke my heart the moment I read it. How can this possibly go on in our state? The fact is it does. One time is too many, but there are more stories similar to this.

The general purpose of my petition is to get better enforcement with this issue as well as the child-support issue. If this story has touched you in any way, please send me an e-mail that says you support my petition with your name and county. 79trm@comcast.net Our courts were put in place to uphold the laws. By this story alone you can see this is not happening in child support and visitation cases. Please help this man, his daughter, and the thousands of others who go to our courts for help and are denied.
