Charles E. "Chuck" McKenzie, 59, of 5133 S. Packerton Road, Warsaw, died at 4:17 p.m. April 3, 2007, at Sarasota Memorial Hospital, Sarasota, Fla.
He was born Jan. 15, 1948, in Wabash County, to Joseph and Maudie Miller McKenzie. In 1970, in Belen, N.M., he married Theresa Giron, who died May 12, 1984. On June 27, 1987, in Winona Lake, he married Sally Stephenson, who survives.
A lifetime Kosciusko County resident, he was a physical education teacher at Wabash City Schools, and a driver's education teacher for 30 years, retiring in 2003. A 1967 graduate of Warsaw Community High School, he earned a bachelor's degree from Western New Mexico University in 1972, and a master's of education degree from St. Francis University. Playing basketball for Claypool High School and Warsaw High School from 1963-1967, he was a 1967 Indiana Basketball All-Star, and was in the top 20 all-time leading scorers in Indiana High School Basketball. He was named the 1960's Player of the Decade by the Times-Union. He was a member of the Father/Son All-Stars Team in 1992. He also played for the Western New Mexico Mustangs. He attended Warsaw Community Church.
Also surviving are three sons: Jason (and wife Sharon) McKenzie, Fortville, and Chad and Mark McKenzie, both of Warsaw; five sisters: Opal Bradley, North Manchester; Vada Whitaker, Edith West and Erma Brandon, all of Warsaw; and Ethel Stone, Argos; three brothers: Jack McKenzie and Earl McKenzie, both of Warsaw; and Larry McKenzie, Overland Park, Kan.; and two grandchildren, Meredith and Gavin McKenzie, both of Fortville. He was preceded in death by a daughter, a sister and a brother.
Services will be at 2 p.m. Tuesday at McHatton-Sadler Funeral Chapel, Warsaw, with Pastors Bryan Koorey and Wayne Whitaker officiating. Burial will be in Oakwood Cemetery, Warsaw.
Calling is from 2 to 4 p.m. and 6 to 8 p.m. Monday at the funeral home.
