Cemetery Concerns

Editor, Times-Union:

First of all I would like to express the beautiful cemetery that we have in this town. It takes a lot of hard work to maintain the grounds and keep it beautiful as the employees do.The reason I am writing is because the lack of service we are receiving since my mother's passing on April 15, 2008.

We chose Oakwood because of the outstanding maintenance and the close proximity for my father and us kid's and grandchildren to visit any day of the week. Mother loved visiting Pike Lake Campground, where her and dad had a camper for a few years.

My problem is we are STILL waiting for the staff to pour the concrete for mom's monument.

We were told a pad would be poured after the monument was purchased. Well, we purchased the monument, it has been ready for almost a month and a half. After that we were told the "procedure" is to wait until there are enough names on the list to get a concrete truck into the cemetery to pour the pads.

We were told the pad should be ready by mid-to-late June. Then it was July. The last word we got last week was it could be August.

What the hell is going on here?

We not only bought my mother's lot, but we bought dad's lot and three additional one's for the family for a total $1,250 that are paid in full, plus concrete charge.

Why do we have to wait for a truckload of cement when they could use a tractor with a mixer on the back and do it within a reasonable time frame?

The article in last week's paper said they were going to raise the rates for lot's and so on. If they are going to approve this, they had better get off their behinds and get their hands dirty and give their customer's some good service.

If you are trying to "save money" buy getting a truck load of cement, then cut the prices instead of raising the rates.

It seems to me the city is making a bundle of money on pouring these pads. We also have conflict of interest by having a city council member serving on the cemetery board and his mom being an employee there.

I hope we can get this resolved in a timely fashion as I want my mother to have a final resting place that she deserves so we can go to visit and put flowers on.
