Celebrate Diversity Features Variety Of Speakers

Posted

For the fifth year, the Celebrate Diversity event on Saturday brought varied people together to hear speakers on an assortment of topics.

“The speakers did a great job this year,” said Gennie Brissette-Tipton, one of the organizers of Celebrate Diversity and the manager of communications and projects at OrthoWorx.

“We had folks talk about faith; about mental illness; about the #MeToo movement; about coming out as an older gentleman; about being a Latino and growing up here and the resources now available to Latinos in our community. It was a really great group of speakers. A very diverse group, which is the point.”

Despite chilly conditions, she said it attracted about 70 people.

Speakers addressed several issues at the Central Park fountain in Warsaw before some of the attendees marched through part of the downtown.

“It was a good turnout. I was impressed,” she said of the  free grassroots effort.

“This year we did have Lawney’s BBQ come out and provide folks with some lunch if they wanted to purchase some lunch, which was great. We appreciate him coming out and giving that option,” she said.

Live music also was part of the two-hour event.

“We’re always really, really happy with folks that come out and support this because it’s something – I think now in our country regardless of your political point of view or your thoughts – I think people are recognizing that we’re all in it together and we need to pull together rather than be polarized, which is what folks are trying to do,” Brissette-Tipton said.
