BURKET – Burket Town Council voted Thursday to wait to have crack sealant work done on town streets until they can also have work done on paving Center and West streets.
Street Superintendent Brad Bibler said he had a conversation with a representative from Phend & Brown about the cracks in town streets that were paved a couple years ago. Bibler was told the cracks were “the nature of the beast.”
Phend & Brown does not do crack seal work and Bibler was recommended to Super Seal and he received a $4,925 quote to do work on the black top work the town had done a couple years ago.
Bibler said Super Seal thought they could do the work this year.
Council President Bill Rayburn said he believed the town had money to pay for it, but said they still have to provide their portion of the money to pave Center and West streets if they apply for a Community Crossings Matching Grant next year, so they had to look at how much funds they had.
Councilwoman Lena Ball asked if the council waited until next year to do the paving work, would the cracks get worse. Rayburn said the cracks will get wet, freeze and widen if something isn’t put down on them. He said he didn’t think it would make that much a difference as long as the work got done. Bibler said he has seen some crack sealant come up with plow trucks when plowing.
Ball and Councilwoman Debra Deniston both said they thought the council should wait until next year to do the work.
In other business, the council:
• Heard from Bibler about the town’s Pavement Surface Evaluation and Rating report.
He said he received some information back about the town’s PASER report. He had not reviewed the information as of Thursday’s meeting because he was emailed the information that afternoon. He will look over the information and, if everything looks OK, he will get the information submitted to Purdue University by the Dec. 1 deadline.
• Approved donating $250 to Toys for Tots and for Santa Claus to give out candy around town starting at 5:30 p.m. Dec. 17.
• Heard the town’s snow plow will have some work done on it, including an oil change, all the filters changed and two new batteries put in.
• Was updated on a property that had complaints about how many unplated cars it had on the property. Rayburn said the property is down to one unplated car and the property owner seems to be cooperating with getting the property cleaned up.
