Burket Council To Pick Ball’s Replacement

Posted

BURKET – With Lena Ball resigning from the Burket Town Council effective June 30, a replacement will have to be found.
When a town council member who was elected or selected as a candidate of a major political party resigns, then the party picks the replacement through a caucus, according to Austin Rovenstine, Burket town attorney and Kosciusko County Election Board member.
However, the members of the Burket Town Council and clerk-treasurer do not fall under that category.
When someone, like Ball, who was not elected or selected as a candidate of a major political party resigns, then the responsibility to pick the replacement falls on the remaining members of the town council under I.C. 3-13-9-4, he said. That law provides the appointment should be made within 30 days of the vacancy at a regular or special meeting of the council.
The clerk-treasurer must give notice of the meeting to the remaining council members at least 10 days prior to the meeting taking place.
