Since the Scott Brown victory in Massachusetts, Senator Evan Bayh has been trying, as he usually does in an election year, to reposition himself as a moderate. Senator Bayh is no moderate and that couldn't be any clearer than by his support for the health care bill that Democrats have tried force on the American people. Senator Bayh didn't just vote for the health care bill, he was a cheerleader for the "Obama Team" in the effort to pass the legislation.
According to a Dec. 21 item in Roll Call, an insider news publication in Washington, DC, when Senator Joe Lieberman stood up to the White House and threatened to kill the legislation over what it would do to state Medicare budgets, several Senate Democrats were called in to meet with the president. After the meeting Senator Bayh, who should have had similar concerns for the budget of Indiana, went after Lieberman and every other holdout. Senator Bayh "gave what many described as a rousing speech, arguing that Democrats could not afford to let the health care reform effort collapse in the face of Republican attacks. One Senate Democratic aide said Bayh made clear that 'if we don't [pass a bill] the only ones who win are Republicans." Roll Call continued, "Bayh's speech seemed to crystallize the situation for Democrats and helped them refocus their energy away from intraparty disputes and onto the GOP and Minority Leader Mitch McConnell."
It's time for Bayh to go. We need someone in his position that is willing to answer the phone and who will actually represent the citizens of Indiana.
