Barbara Elaine Smith Goon, 79, died at 9:10 p.m. March 28, 2011, in Miller’s Merry Manor, Warsaw.
She was born Feb. 20, 1932, in Warsaw, to Charles and Loureta Sellers Smith. On Feb. 25, 1951, she married Donald E. Goon. They divorced in 1992.
A lifetime Kosciusko County resident, she worked at Warsaw Furniture Manufacturing Corp., Hank’s Chicks, was a full-time homemaker who shared work on the family dairy farm; was a production manager at Tri-State Advertising Co. Inc. and a salesperson for Warsaw Printing, both in Warsaw, and at Harmony Press, Bourbon, retiring in 2000. For many years she wrote the Clunette news column for the Bourbon News-Mirror weekly newspaper, taking over for her grandmother, Gertrude Anglin Smith.
She graduated as valedictorian of the 1949 class of Atwood High School; was an honor graduate of Fort Wayne International Business College; a former member and attendee of Clunette United Methodist Church; also attended Atwood Aldersgate United Methodist Church; attended and was a member of Atwood Christian Fellowship; belonged to Prairie Township Extension Homemakers Club; O.N.O. of Etna Green; Agnes Pruyn Chapman Chapter of Daughters of the American Revolution; and secretary/treasurer of Atwood Alumni Association. She was known for her humor and homemade yeast rolls, and enjoyed spending time with family and friends, reading and writing.
Surviving are a daughter, Kathleen (and spouse Jan) Gawthrop, North Manchester; four sons, Thames (and spouse Priscilla) Goon, Karlton (and spouse Julia) Goon, Jonathan (and spouse Tina) Goon and Mitchell Goon, all of Warsaw; her companion, Maurice McDaniel, Atwood; a sister, Patricia (and spouse G. Curtis) VanDeWater, Clunette; a brother, William E. (and spouse Faye) Smith, Clunette; 15 grandchildren: Alison Gawthrop Sanson, Mace (and spouse Cookie) Gawthrop, Tristan (and spouse Lydia) Gawthrop, Taylor (and spouse Jessica) Goon, Jessica (and spouse Tim) Joy, Jodi (and spouse Steve) Oldfather, Blaine (and spouse Lisa) Goon, Joel (and spouse Stacie) Goon, Scot (and spouse Misty) Goon and Brad, Gail, Melanie, Chad, Ryan and David Goon; and 13 great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by a son, Gahlon Goon; her parents; and a twin brother.
She donated her body to research hoping to help others.
A memorial service will be at 3 p.m. Saturday at the Atwood Community Building.
