Staff Report-
FORT WAYNE – On Saturday, AWS Foundation will host the 12th annual Disabilities Expo.
The event serves as a resource fair with over 120 vendors with products and services for individuals with disabilities and those that care for them. But it’s also a celebration of the Northeast Indiana disability community. It takes place from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the Allen County War Memorial Coliseum. Admission and parking are free to the public (for free parking, you must tell the attendant that you are there for the Disabilities Expo).
“We’re really excited for people to see what we’ve planned this year,” stated Andie Mosley, event coordinator. “Our committee put a lot of work into blending old and new ideas to ensure everyone has a good time and finds the resources they need.”
Each hour there will be entertainment such as Turnstone adaptive sports demonstrations and performances by groups like the Jesters and Fort Wayne Dance Collective. The Art Show and Sale features the work of artists with disabilities. Event organizers ensured that all can participate in the collaborative art project by including adaptive art equipment and surfaces. A game center will feature jumbo checkers and Connect 4, ring toss, shuffleboard and corn hole. For those who may get overstimulated by noise and light, one vendor will have a mobile sensory room and sensory items can be checked out at the information table. The Disabilities Expo uses the Conference Center entrance, so those who have trouble walking or wheeling far distances can be dropped off right at the door. Therapy dogs will roam the event all day to ensure the comfort of our attendees.
While the Disabilities Expo was designed for those with disabilities, everyone is welcome.
