AWL To Have Kitten Shower SaturdayPIERCETON – Three kittens were brought into the Animal Welfare League, 1048 S. CR 325E, Pierceton, this week after their mother was hit by a car.
Volunteer Terri Corner is bottle feeding them, along with the nine other cats she’s fostering.
AWL Executive Tonya Blanchard said last month there were 190 animals brought in, of which 170 were cats. Some of the cats are pregnant, so that will put the animals to at least 200.
In order to help teach people about fostering kittens and what goes into it, the AWL will have a kitten shower Saturday from 1 to 3 p.m.
Corner said the AWL held a kitten shower last year.
During Saturday’s event, there will be seven to 10 people to walk people through the fostering process and answer questions, she said.
There is also going to be 10- to 15-minute speeches about things like the AWL’s nursery nanny program, adopting a kitten and the fostering process. AWL Board of Directors President John Lantz will speak at 2:30 p.m.
The purpose of Saturday’s event is to encourage more people to foster cats and learn more about the process, Corner said. Last year, she thinks five or seven people signed up to be fosters and two “momma cats” were adopted.
Corner said when a person fosters an animal, the person is the caregiver for an animal for a certain amount of time. The foster parents are the bridge between the animal shelter and the animal’s forever home.
Foster parents also can choose what time of an animal’s life they want to foster, whether they want to foster for newborns or older animals.
Corner brought up the fact that not everyone is able to adopt an animal. However, they may be able to foster an animal in some situations. Corner said fostering’s benefit is people can have a companion for a short period of time.
On Saturday, Corner said the AWL is open for regular business as well from 11:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. and people can come in and adopt animals.
Donations of items things like wet food and bottles will be taken Saturday.
