Auxiliary Benefits From Friendly Wager Between Township, ChamberNORTH WEBSTER - A friendly wager between North Webster-Tippecanoe Township Chamber of Commerce President Emily Shipley and Tippecanoe Township Trustee Chris Francis resulted Saturday morning in a $270 donation to the American Legion Auxiliary Unit #253.

The North Webster Community Center hosted the VeteRUN and Walk Memorial Day 5K on Saturday. If Shipley beat Francis in the run, they were going to donate $100 toward the township’s cemetery beautification project. If Francis won, he would donate $100 to the Auxiliary.

For the last few days before the first annual run, chip timed by the Kosciusko Runners’ Association, the Chamber and the trustee traded friendly barbs on Facebook.

The race was close, but Shipley’s time was 36:21:36, while Francis came in at 36:21:98.

Francis said they ran together - and walked a little together - the entire time. At first, they were going to “swap it out,” but later decided to give the $200, plus an additional $70 that was donated, to the Auxiliary.

The race started and finished at the NWCC. All runners had the chance to select a veteran to run in memory of or in honor of. Coupled with the free movie Friday night, the race was the official kick-off to the NWCC’s Summer at the Center Celebrations, lasting through August.
