The month of March is a special month for the Atwood Lions Club. Several years ago, Lion member Esther Johnson presented to club members the idea of helping The Salvation Army when the March fish fry is held. Her ideas was readily accepted, and Esther has chaired this project since 2016.
The project involves asking guests coming to the fish fry to help with items Johnson has found needed by keeping in touch with Corps Administrator Ken Locke. Locke told Johnson items needed this year were cleaning items, paper goods and diapers.
In addition to the designated items brought in by attendees of the fish fry, the Atwood Lions have added to the donation with 300 pounds of packaged ground beef. The meat is purchased locally and wrapped in 1-pound packages, which makes distribution easier.
This year, due to the coronavirus, the meat was not as available at the time of the fish fry. It was a little over a month wait before Johnson was notified the ground beef was ready. She made arrangements for delivering the packages to Lock and with help from Lions President Clair Milleman, the project was completed.
