Area Students Win At History Contest, Advance To StateThe Indiana Historical Society (IHS) announced 46 students from Edgewood Middle School, Lakeview Middle School and Warsaw Community High School are among the finalists of the National History Day in Indiana (NHDI) northeast region contest at Ivy Tech Community College in Fort Wayne.

Approximately 260 students took part in Saturday’s contest, with all finalists advancing to the NHDI state contest, April 13, at the University of Indianapolis.

NHDI is a yearlong program dedicated to enhancing history education in Indiana's schools, according to a news release. Students in grades four through 12 explore a historical subject and then use their research to create a documentary, exhibit, paper, performance or website. To reach the state contest, students must qualify at one of six regional contests around Indiana – with the northeast region contest being the first of 2019.

Volunteers judges are still needed at five upcoming contests in Notre Dame (Feb. 23), Carmel (March 2), Evansville (March 5), Franklin (March 9) and Hanover (March 16). In addition, judges are needed for the Indianapolis Public Schools (IPS) District Contest (March 13) and at the state competition (April 13).

NHDI is presented by the Indiana National Guard, The Richard W. and Irene Rooker Family Foundation, TCU Foundation and the Vigran Family Foundation. To register as a volunteer judge, visit www.indianahistory.org/historyday or call 317-232-1882.
