Area Roundup: Lady Vikings Pull Away From Rochester

AKRON – A Three Rivers Conference girls basketball game that was tied at 10 after the first quarter turned into a blowout victory for the Tippecanoe Valley Lady Vikings.

Valley outscored the Rochester Lady Zebras 20-9 in the second quarter and 18-8 in third en route to a 60-31 win.

Sophie Bussard led the Lady Vikings with 22 points and became just the third player in program history to top 1,200 career points.

Bussard now has 1,211 points.

Hayley Backus tallied 11 points and seven rebounds in the win, while Sidney Wagner chipped in with 10 points and five assists.

With the win, Valley improved to 14-5 overall and sits in a three-way tie atop the TRC standings with Northfield and Manchester at 6-1.

Valley will play at conference foe Southwood Saturday.



Bazzoni, Fierstos Lead Manchester To Win

WABASH – Led by Evan Bazzoni and Kennedy Fierstos, the Manchester Lady Squires won at Wabash for the first time in 12 years.

Bazzoni tallied 17 points, five rebounds, four assists and a steal, and Fierstos added 14 points, three rebounds, three steals and an assist in Manchester’s 39-30 win over the Lady Apaches.

Manchester led 8-5 after one quarter of play and 15-13 at halftime, before outscoring the hosts 19-5 in the third quarter.

With the win, the Lady Squires are now 12-7 overall and 6-1 in the TRC. Manchester is tied atop the conference with Northfield and Tippecanoe Valley.

Wabash fell to 8-11 and 3-3.

The Lady Squires are in action again tonight when they host Rochester for senior night.

In Thursday’s JV game, Ranissa Shambarger scored 17 points, leading Manchester to a 35-24 win over Wabash.



Whitko Lady Wildcats Snap Losing Streak

WABASH – The Whitko Lady Wildcats closed the third quarter on a 10-0 run and held on for a 43-40 Three Rivers Conference girls basketball win at Southwood Thursday.

The three-point win snapped an 11-game losing stream, as the Lady Wildcats improved to 4-15 overall and 2-4 in the TRC standings. Southwood fell to 4-15 and 1-6.

Whitko led 14-10 after one quarter of play, but trailed 17-16 at halftime.

Whitko outscored the hosts 27-23 in the second half en route to the win.

Ellie Snep led the Lady Wildcats with another double-double, this time 18 points and 12 rebounds.

Sarah Hewitt and Kayla Schipper scored 10 and seven points, respectively, for Whitko.

The Lady Wildcats are in action again Saturday when they travel to Northfield for another TRC game.



Lady Trojans Avenge Loss To County Rival Argos

LAKEVILLE – The Triton Lady Trojans avenged a loss to county rival Argos Thursday in the consolation round of the Bi-County Tournament at LaVille.

The Lady Trojans, who fell 35-33 in overtime to Argos on Nov. 6, beat the Lady Dragons 37-29 Thursday.

Jaela Faulkner led Triton with 12 points, while Delanie Groves and Chelsea Johnson chipped in with 11 and eight points, respectively.

The game was tied at 7 after one quarter of play, and Triton outscored Argos 15-0 in the second stanza.

Morgan Dunlap led Argos, now 8-11, with 10 points.

Triton improved to 6-15 and will conclude the regular season on Jan. 25 when it hosts North Judson.



Wawasee Freshmen Fall To Plymouth

PLYMOUTH – Landon Gause scored nine points to lead Wawasee’s freshman boys basketball team in a 39-26 loss at Plymouth Thursday.

Ben Haines and Gavin Hunziker scored six and four points, respectively, for the Warriors, who are now 8-4 overall and 2-3 in the NLC.



Six Locals Among Region 2 All-Stars

Six local football players were named to the Indiana Football Coaches Association Region 2 list of All-Stars.

On the offensive side, the list includes Warsaw’s Matthew Shoemaker, Triton’s Conner Ousley and Wawasee’s Brayden Johnson.

Defensively, Tippecanoe Valley’s Jose Rivera, Triton’s Tye Orsund and Warsaw’s John Culbertson were honored.



Warsaw Boys Hoops Game Canceled

Because of the weather forecast, Warsaw’s boys basketball games scheduled for Saturday at Fort Wayne Snider have been canceled and will not be made up.

There was to be a varsity, JV and freshman game.
